-Main character of the epic -Reveals his heroic abilities by fighting of evil monsters, demons and dragons -He realizes that he is a great hero and likes to boast about it to almost everyone he sees -He first shows that he is a hero by killing the demon Grendal -Then after Grendal is dead, his mother comes to avenge is death and Beowulf kills her too -Later on when Beowulf is old, he still is a hero so he kills a dragon for his third battle -He is always for being heroic, courageous, and brave -The people love him Hrothgar -King of the Danes -loved Beowulf and could “adopt him in his heart” -calls Beowulf to come rescue his people -Gives wise council to Beowulf Grendel - Monstor that attacks Herot Hall -Decendent of Cain -His arm gets ripped of by Beowulf in their fight -Dies in his cave Shield Sheafson -Who everyone descends from -Danish King -Founded the ruling house -People looked up to him because “he was a good king” Grendel's Mother -Mother of Grendel -Comes to avenge her sons death -Destroys parts of Herot like her son -Fights Beowulf but ends up getting killed Unferth -Danish warrior that opposed Beowulf -Critiques Beowulf’s swimming contest and makes fun of him -Beowulf calls Unferth drunk -Unwilling to fight Grendel -Inferior to Beowulf Wiglaf -Helped Beowulf fight against the dragon -Willing to put is life on the line for the people -Known for being heroic like Beowulf -Reveals a next generations of heroic qualities because he takes after Beowulf's brave characteristics -Sets a hopefull tone for the future |
